Meet the Governors

Welcome to the Governors' section!

Our Governing Body are proud to hold strategic responsibility for our school. The DfE define the Governors' Core Roles as:
  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of its pupils and the performance management of staff
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

Our Governing Body meet each half term and in addition, two committees meet to fulfil specific duties. We hope you will find the attached documents useful and would welcome your feedback at any time. Governors can be contacted via the School Office.


Current Governor Profiles

 
Deborah Adam
 
Deborah Adam joined the Governing Body in 1996 as a staff governor serving for eight years. Following partial retirement from the teaching profession she remained on the board as a Local Authority governor and her term ends in August 2018.  At present, Deborah is the Chair of the Governing Body.
 
Experience in education as English Manager at HJS, an Advanced Skills Teacher for the county and a consultant with Reading University for teacher training brings considerable understanding of pupil and curriculum issues.
 
Personal loyalty to HJS means that she is committed to the welfare and progress of pupils as well as the ongoing care for all staff in the school community.

 

Katherine Peett
 
Katherine Peett joined the Governing Body in November 2013 and her term as governor ends in November 2017.  She is a Foundation Governor on behalf of All Saints’ Church, Catherington with responsibility for Inclusion.  At present, Katherine is Vice Chair of the Governing Body. In addition she serves on the Pupil Outcomes Committee and the Christian Values Team.
 
Katherine works locally as a community Pharmacist, and hopes to put the skills used in her working life to good use in serving on the Governing Body.  Also, as one of the Foundation Governors, she wants to see the strong links the school has with the various Churches in the area continue to develop, as it is through these links that the caring and affirming atmosphere that makes the school such a great place for our children to be educated is able to strengthen and grow. 
 
Katherine is pleased to be serving the school and the Church as a Foundation Governor, particularly as her younger daughter attends the school, and looks forward to supporting the work of the school in this role.
  

 
Emma Hart
 
Emma Hart is a Parent Governor and was elected in July 2015 and her term will end in August 2019. Emma, currently has a daughter in Year 5 and a daughter who joined Year 3 in September.

Emma serves on the Pupil Outcomes Committee and has responsibility for computing with a particular focus on e-safety.


 
Rev'd Gill Hill

Rev'd Gill Hill is the Vicar of All Saints Catherington and St James, Clanfield and a Canon of Portsmouth Cathedral. Following a year’s term as Governor at Horndean CE Junior school in 2002, Gill returned to serve as a Foundation Governor with effect from September 2016 where she is now a member of the Pupil Outcomes Committee and liaison governor for English. Gill also serves as a Foundation Governor at Catherington CE Infant School.

Before moving to Catherington, Gill was ordained in 1990 and spent six years as Curate in a Southsea church during which she worked alongside families based in temporary accommodation, whilst also working as a Community Development Officer for the Children’s Society based at St Clare’s in Warren Park. Gill then spent five years leading an inner city church whilst studying for a PhD in Pastoral Theology, before moving to her present post.

Gill enjoys leading occasional services and collective worship at Horndean CE Junior School. She is looking forward to further strengthening links between the school and its local church and delighted to be part of a school with dedicated leadership, strong Christian values and commitment to serving the pupils in its charge.



Hannah Lowry
 
Hannah Lowry joined the Governing Body in September 2014 and her term as a governor ends in March 2019. She is a co-opted governor with responsibility for governor development and training. In addition she serves on the Pupil Outcomes Committee as Vice Chair and the Christian Values Team.
 
Hannah is employed as a Children’s and Families’ Leader at Horndean Baptist Church and as such is involved in the community in Horndean. As part of her job, Hannah works in partnership with the rest of the leadership team of Horndean Baptist Church and as such is experienced in making decisions and leading others, a skill she now brings to Horndean C of E Junior School.
 
Previous to this role, Hannah was an infant school teacher at a Church of England Primary School in Blackpool, where she gained experience in education, children’s progress and leading science. Hannah is actively involved in Horndean C of E Junior School through the reading project, leading acts of worship & RE lessons as well as running clubs after school. She feels it is a real privilege to serve the school and local community, and is thrilled to do this in the capacity of ‘Community Governor’.

 

Dave Merefield

Dave Merefield joined the Governing Body in December 2016 and his term ends in December 2020.  He is a co-opted Governor who serves on the Resource Committee, with responsibility for Premises.
 
He has two children, one in Horndean Infants School and one at the CE Junior School.
 
Dave is employed by a major food retailer as the Senior Sustainability Manager where is has accountability for reducing carbon emissions and managing energy throughout the business.
 
He is keen to use his experience to support the Governing Body and help maintain the school’s reputation – putting the children’s’ learning and development at the centre of all decisions made.   



Rebecca Reeve
 
Becky Reeve joined the Governing Body in October 2016 as a Parent Governor and her term as governor ends in 2020.  She serves on the Resources Committee.
 
Becky has two children, one in Horndean Infants and one in the Junior school, and has a passion for supporting children and families and has built a career doing this with 25 years experience.
 
Becky currently works in Children Services, so brings sound safeguarding knowledge in addition to management experience in performance management and H&S and budgetary oversight.
 
Becky is keen to support the school to develop and maintain its good practice.

 

Mark Robertson
 
Mark Robertson joined the Governing Body in September 2015 as a Parent Governor and his term as governor ends in 2020.  He serves on the Resources Committee as Vice Chair and holds responsibility for Health and Safety.

Mark has a keen interest in the governance of the school and is proud of its reputation and standing in the community.  The opportunity to act as a parent governor is his way of helping to maintain this reputation and standing.



David Small

David Small joined the Governing Body in March 2017 as a Foundation Governor and his term as a Governor will end in March 2021. He serves on the Resources Committee.
 
David has worked as a Solicitor in his own Practice in Chichester for 22 years and hopes to bring some of the experience that he has gained over that career to good use in serving the Governing Body and its committees.
 
Living locally for nearly 10 years David is aware if the School’s proud reputation and Christian ethos and is keen to be a part of the future of the School and its community.



Heather Smith

Heather Smith joined the Governing Body in September 2015 as a co-opted governor with responsibility for finance and currently serves on the Resources Committee as Chair.
 
Both Heather’s children have/are attending the school, her son is currently in Year 5 and her daughter left in July 2015.  She has always been involved with the school’s PTA being the main co-ordinator for the children’s Christmas Shopping Day.  This gave Heather an insight into the school and inspired her to support in a more formal way through a governing role.
 
Heather is a qualified accountant with 15 year post qualification experience.  She is currently working for the NHS which brings a wealth of knowledge and challenges that she is applying and drawing on to support and challenge the school. Heather has previous education finance experience working in the Education Finance Team for Portsmouth City Council and auditing schools with West Sussex County Council.



Tom Upfield
 
Tom Upfield joined the Governing Body in February 2016 and his term as a governor ends in 2020.  He is a staff governor and serves on the Pupil Outcomes Committee.

Tom is the Year 6 Leader at Horndean Church of England Junior School as well as being the school English Leader. Within his school role, Tom works in partnership with other members of the Leadership Team and, as a result, plays an active role in School Improvement.

He has been excited to become a governor, joining a team of people with different backgrounds and expertise, all wanting the best for the pupils at Horndean Church of England Junior School.
